Self Help Africa’s is implementing a combination of directly implemented and partner led rural development programmes in Malawi.
The projects are situated in the south of the country close to the capital Lilongwe, and in the far north at Karongo close to the shores of Lake Malawi.
Self Help Africa’s work in Malawi focusses on food and agricultural production with a focus on agro-ecological farming practices, and enterprise development. Self Help Africa has been working in Malawi since the mid-1990s.

Landlocked Malawi is among the world's least developed countries. The economy depends on substantial inflows of international aid. Progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals has been hampered by the spread of HIV/AIDS and the droughts between 2001 and 2005, which affected five million people.
Harvests are generally poor due to a lack of agricultural inputs and a reliance on rain-fed agriculture. 40-60% of rural households face chronic food insecurity for between two and five months every year.
