Self Help Africa is implementing a series rural development, and new pilot market orientated agricultural production projects in Ethiopia.
Much of this work is focussed on the Oromia and Southern Nation and Nationalities provinces, although there are also new pilot schemes in the east and north of the country, in collaboration with local and international partners.
The projects currently underway a small-holder farmer marketing and agricultural resilience programme (SMART), an extensive savings and credit cooperative development programme. and an early generation seed production programme.
Elsewhere there are pilot projects underway focussing on the production of groundnut, for the development of the potential of mung bean production, and with farmers who are producing malting barley for the brewing sector. |
Situated in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is Africa's oldest independent country. Apart from a five-year occupation by Mussolini's Italy, it has never been colonised.
Regrettably, the nation is better known for its periodic droughts and famines, its long civil conflict, and a border war with neighbouring Eritrea. It was following one of it's most devastating famines, in 1984, that Self Help Africa was first established.
Economy: A predominent agrarian society, Ethiopia depends heavily on agriculture, which is often affected by drought. Coffee is a key export, and vulnerable to international price fluctuations.
